Most People Get This Wrong, Even Pros...
Most people get this wrong when they kick. Yes, even professional fighters.
It's pretty severe, I would estimate 90% of people get it wrong... maybe even 99% outside of Thailand.
How do I know? Because I've seen Saenchai and other legendary Jocky gym coaches correct this on their students, even with prolific fighters.
You see, most people just float their kicks back to stance after kicking, while truly world class kickers do not do this.
It's the reason why Saenchai can kick and score so fast without being easily defended, caught or swept.
All the body building in the world won't enhance it, and that's exactly what this student did for years.

This exercise will help you kick faster, double your reset kicking speed, and prevent your kicks from getting caught or being swept.
Why is retraction training so important though?
Because it is the opposing action of the hitting action.
Not training it is the equivalent of only throwing a punch and not worrying about retracting the punch back to stance... (ya, a ton of people do that too!)
It's the equivalent of doing only bench press and not doing back exercises.
The principle of push pull is simple. It is a conclusive, unobjectionable truth in training. Yet people do not apply it.
Even worse, they do stuff like cable punching or resistance band kicking, which actually makes them worse long term (please don't call that sport science).
And even if people apply the push pull principle to some body parts, they definitely don't have the tools to apply it to this specific movement.
This exercise is what legendary sport scientist, Dr. Yessis, calls the "paw back." It is the opposing action of the "knee drive or glute drive."
Saenchai and other legendary Jocky gym coaches will correct many fighters on this, but after years of training just the hitting portion of the kick AND NOT the retraction, it becomes very difficult to correct.
That's how bad habits are formed and why most people never get really good. In my view, it's a tragic waste of everyone's time.
Bad habits negatively snowball and make it hard to correct later on... unless you have amazing tools to make up for it (this exercise is a great example).
On the flip side, good habits positively snowball (which many of the most talented fighters, the 0.1%, naturally receive with great technical coaching).
Unfortunately, I am not the 0.1%, and neither is David.
If Dr. Yessis designed this exercise after working with countless world champions and olympic medalists in every sport, he thinks most people need it to make breakthroughs.
